Published student accommodation ranges for Malaysia, 2026
Hawker and food-court meals run RM 8–15; cooking at home is cheaper again, and eating in restaurants is a great deal more.
Kuala Lumpur's unlimited student pass for LRT, MRT, monorail and buses is RM 100 a month. Ride-hailing instead of public transport is what pushes this to the top of the range.
Electricity, water, broadband and a mobile plan. Air-conditioning is most of the variance.

How much does it cost to study in Malaysia for a year?
For most international students, living costs land somewhere between RM 1,500 and RM 3,000 a month depending on the city, the accommodation and how you live — call it RM 18,000 to RM 36,000 a year before tuition. Tuition is the bigger and more variable half: across the 1,182 programmes at our partner campuses, published totals for a whole bachelor's degree run from under RM 20,000 to over RM 200,000. Is Malaysia cheaper than the UK or Australia?
Substantially, on both tuition and living costs, which is much of why it takes international students from 18 markets. The comparison worth making is with the specific programme you would otherwise take — our counsellors do it routinely, and the published fee on every programme page is there so you can do it yourself.

What is the EMGS fee and do I have to pay it?
Yes, if you are an international student. EMGS is the Ministry of Higher Education's agency for international student applications, and every student pass goes through it. The first-year bundle — processing, visa approval letter, student pass, personal bond, medical screening and insurance — commonly runs RM 3,200 to RM 4,950, varying by nationality. Is Penang really cheaper than Kuala Lumpur?
For accommodation, generally yes — Kuala Lumpur sits at the top of the national range and secondary cities sit below it. Food, transport and utilities are much closer than people expect. Where you study should be decided by which university runs your programme; the saving on rent is real but it is rarely the deciding factor.
Can I work while I study?
Malaysia permits international students limited part-time work during semester breaks and holidays, subject to conditions set by Immigration and your institution. It is not a reliable way to fund a degree, and no budget on this page assumes any income from it.
