IELTS Academic

Sections
Four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, SpeakingListening 30 min · Reading 60 min · Writing 60 min · Speaking 11–14 min
Length
2 hours 45 minutes
Scoring
Band 0–9, in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half.B2 ≈ 5.5–6.5 · C1 ≈ 7.0–8.0

Listening, Reading and Writing run back to back with no break. Speaking can be up to seven days either side of them. Academic and General Training share Listening and Speaking but differ on Reading and Writing — university applicants need Academic.

TOEFL iBT

Sections
Four skills in fixed order — Reading, Listening, Speaking, WritingReading ~30 min · Listening ~29 min · Speaking ~8 min · Writing ~23 min
Length
About 90 minutes, no scheduled break
Scoring
Moving from 0–120 to a 1–6 band scale in half-point steps. Reports carry both scales until 2028 so universities can adjust.

Rebuilt in January 2026 and now roughly half an hour shorter than the test most guides still describe. Reading and Listening are adaptive — questions get harder or easier as you answer. Speaking is recorded rather than face to face, which suits candidates who find an examiner across the desk harder than a microphone.

MUET

Sections
Four papers, each worth 25% — Listening, Speaking, Reading, WritingListening 50 min · Speaking 30 min · Reading 75 min · Writing 75 min
Length
3 hours 50 minutes across the papers
Scoring
Band 1.0 to Band 5+, aggregated out of 360.Band 3.0 ≈ B1 · Band 4.0–4.5 ≈ B2 · Band 5.0 ≈ C1

Most Malaysian universities ask for at least Band 3, though the bar differs by institution and faculty. Note that the nine-band scale replaced the old six-band one in 2021 — any guide still telling you to aim for "Band 6" is describing a test that no longer exists.

Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia

PTE Academic

Sections
Three parts, 22 tasks — Speaking & Writing, Reading, ListeningSpeaking & Writing 76–84 min · Reading 22–30 min · Listening 31–39 min
Length
About 2 hours 15 minutes, one sitting
Scoring
10–90 on the Global Scale of English, marked by computer.

Computer-based throughout, with fast results — which is what makes it useful when a deadline is close. Two speaking tasks were added in August 2025 and the test grew from two hours to 2h15.

APTIS

Sections
A core grammar and vocabulary component, plus any of the four skillsCore 25 minutes · skills added as required
Length
Depends on how many skills are tested
Scoring
0–50 per skill, each with a CEFR level. The core component sets your level but is not itself given a CEFR grade.Reported A1 to C2 per skill

Modular by design: an employer can test one skill or all four, which is why it is used for workplace assessment rather than university entry. Ask us for the current format and dates — we arrange APTIS bookings directly.

Linguaskill

Sections
Modular — Reading & Listening as one adaptive module, then Writing and SpeakingReading & Listening 60–85 min · Writing 45 min · Speaking separate
Length
Per module; take one or all three
Scoring
82–180 on the Cambridge English Scale. Take more than one module and the overall score is their average.Reported A1 to C1

Results inside 48 hours, which is why employers reach for it when screening candidates rather than admitting students.

Booking the exam

Where each test is booked.

Registration is paid to the exam body, not to us. Book it yourself, or leave it with your counsellor.

APTISBritish Council — ask us and we book it for you

Every exam is booked with the exam body and paid directly to them — we do not resell test seats, and no fee on this page is payable to us. If you would rather not deal with the booking, tell your counsellor and we arrange the date and venue as part of your track.

Questions

Exam Preparation — FAQs.

Which exam do I actually need?+

It depends on the door you are opening: universities typically ask for IELTS, TOEFL, MUET or PTE; immigration authorities for IELTS, TOEFL or PTE; employers benchmark with APTIS or Linguaskill. Our counsellors confirm the right exam against your target before you enrol.

Is the official exam fee included?+

No — registration fees are set by and paid directly to each exam body. We help you register for the right test date and venue, and the indicative fees are published below.

How fast can I improve my score?+

Most IELTS students move 0.5–1.0 band in one 64-hour track, depending on starting level and daily practice outside class.

What if my level is below B1?+

Start with the Premium English Programme — the placement test will map your fastest route to exam readiness.

Do I need a test at all?+

Often not. For our Malaysian partner institutions, completing a recognised English programme can satisfy the requirement without any exam fee. Tell us which university you are aiming at and we will confirm which route it accepts before you pay for anything.

How recently was this information checked?+

Every format and score scale on this page was verified against the exam boards on 20 August 2026. Two of these tests changed in the last eighteen months — TOEFL was rebuilt in January 2026 and PTE gained tasks in August 2025 — so confirm with the board before you book.

Can I take the exam here?+

Test venues are set by each exam board rather than by us. We help you book the right date and venue, and for APTIS we arrange it directly.
